A Hà Nội chess club is often a room rather than a clubhouse: a flat in an apartment tower, a rented office on Tố Hữu, a ward cultural house or a lecture hall. Most are known only from the tournaments they post. CLB Chess Master in Sky Central, Định Công, holds monthly class tournaments; Kim Phụng on Tam Trinh numbers its rapid and blitz events; Hoàng Gia in Đoài Phương runs cups and mid-autumn tournaments west of the city.
Universities carry a share of the club scene: VNU’s VCC, Phenikaa in Hà Đông, the Foreign Trade University on Chùa Láng, and clubs at the University of Education and the VNU school of languages. Room 501 of the Tây Hà building at 19 Tố Hữu is shared by several organisers. Whether a visitor may simply turn up is rarely stated; the card says so when it is.
